Keep Your Dog Safe and Cool: The Dangers of Hot Asphalt

As the summer temperatures rise, it's important to be mindful of how the heat affects our furry friends. While we might enjoy the warmth, our dogs can suffer from the hot temperatures, especially when it comes to walking on asphalt. Let's dive into why this is a concern and how you can keep your dog safe and cool during hot weather!!

The Danger of Hot Asphalt

Did you know that when the air temperature is 77°F, the asphalt temperature can reach a scorching 125°F? When the air temperature hits 86°F, the asphalt can soar to 135°F, and at just 87°F (ONE DEGREE MORE), the asphalt temperature can be a blistering 143°F. Skin damage to your dog's paw pads can begin to occur at 125°F, and being exposed to hot pavement for just a minute can cause serious harm. I don’t know about you, but I’ve never mastered the less than 60 second dog walk.

If you’re not sure, play it safe and take a few extra moments to check. Just remember, if the asphalt is too hot for your human hand or foot, you can assume it is too hot for your dog's paws. To check, simply place the back of your hand on the pavement for seven seconds. If it's too hot for you, it's too hot for them.

Tips to Keep Your Dog Safe

  1. Walk During the Coolest Parts of the Day: Plan your walks early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are lower, and the asphalt has had a chance to cool down.

  2. Stick to Grass: Whenever possible, walk your dog on grass or dirt paths to avoid the hot pavement.

  3. Check Your Dog's Paws Daily: During the hot seasons, make it a habit to check your dog's pads daily to ensure they are healthy and free from burns or hot spots.

  4. Use Protective Products: We love Super Snout's Rad Pad, which acts as a protective layer and can soothe and hydrate your dog's paw pads. It can be used before walks to protect against the heat or to treat minor cuts and burns. Another great alternative is coconut oil, which also provides a protective barrier and soothing relief and can be found at your local supermarket.

Be Prepared

A quick tip you didn’t ask for: always carry a small container of Rad Pad or coconut oil with you on walks. In the event your dog does experience a burn, you’ll be prepared to treat it right away!
